Container version

A saved snapshot of everything in a GTM container at a point in time. Publishing creates a new version, and you can roll back to an earlier one.

In plain English

Each time you click Submit and publish, GTM saves the whole container as a numbered version. Give each version a clear name and description so you can tell later what changed.

If a publish breaks something, open Versions, find the last good version and publish it again. That's far quicker than unpicking changes by hand.

You can also create a version without publishing it, which is a useful backup before a big change.

Example

Version 42, "Add GA4 purchase event and Google Ads conversion", goes live on Friday. On Monday, revenue in GA4 has doubled because the purchase tag fires twice. You republish version 41 straight away, then fix the problem in a workspace.
